We have seen many injuries from simple chipping, right through to major breakages of teeth  from the  upper and lower jaws  clashing together. Heads, hockey balls, feet and lots more coming into sudden and unexpected contact with the lips and  mouth are just as damaging.  At best the injury  is uncomfortable and temporary  but without correct protection serious damage to the teeth is not uncommon.  Although  thankfully few injuries result in teeth being  lost outright immediately,  a very heavy blow can lead to long  term problems like nerve death and resorption of the teeth all of which can seriously  shorten their  lifespans.

We know that as children grown a new mouthguard each year may feel like a bit of an investment but the benefits of an affordable  well made mouthguard do substantially outweigh the lifetime costs that a damaged tooth can result in. As  children grow they gain body mass and momentum so when deciding when to  get your child a custom mouthguard do think about the size of the people they may be competing against or  the speed / hardness of the hockey/lacrosse stick that may be wielded, not just their own size or competence!
